Spindrift Book of Student Poetry Launched

A packed house at an Owen Sound coffee shop helped launch "Spindrift 2012", a book of poems by Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB) students.

Under the leadership of English teacher Sarah Kerr, a team of student editors chose about 40 poems to publish.  Owen Sound Collegiate & Vocational Institute (OSCVI) alumna and teacher Jennifer Klemm created the cover art.  OSCVI student Jessie Miller provided a series of pen-and-ink drawings.  Many teachers from Bluewater schools encouraged students to send in poems and assisted with the editing process.  Grey Highlands Secondary School (GHSS) student Fiona Holland thanked her teacher, Jenna Durnin.  "I didn't know I was a poet until we worked on this in class," she said.

Students are proud to see their work in print.  "It was great to see their faces when they saw the book for the first time," said teacher Sarah Kerr.  "They were very excited."

Norah Phillips, teacher-librarian at OSCVI, also launched a website as part of the project.  And for the first time in the history of Spindrift, this year's anthology is available for purchase as an iBook e-edition.

The project was supported by BWDSB and the Ministry of Education's SpeakUp grant.  Those interested can visit the website at www.SpindriftPoetry.ca to preview the book or to find out how to purchase a copy.
