West Hill Excels at OFSAA Championships
The West Hill Nordic Ski Team competed at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) 2012 Championships in Huntsville on February 23 and 24, 2012. With over 620 competitors and up to 25 school teams in each category, West Hill Secondary School (WHSS) kept its long-standing reputation as one of the top teams in the province!
On Thursday (February 23) at Arrowhead Provincial Park, the Junior Girls skied 5 km, Junior Boys and Senior Girls 6.5 km and the Senior Boys 8 km. Top finishers were: Logan Hong in 5th place for Junior Girls, Julian Smith 2nd and Avery Vreugdenhil-Beauclerc 3rd for Junior Boys and Chelsea Gillies 11th for Senior Girls.
Although each racer goes out individually, team results are calculated. On the first day, the Junior Boys from WHSS won silver, Junior Girls were 11th, Senior Girls 4th and Senior Boys 7th.
On the Friday, an 800 m relay race course was set up in the downtown core of Huntsville right down Main Street. Students were let out of school to come and cheer skiers on. Three of WHSS teams made it into the final heats. Juniors Boys and Senior Girls narrowly missed bronze, both placing 4th in the province, with the Senior Boys placing 5th. The combined points from each day earned the Senior Girls and Boys silver on the last day after the relays.
Considering that the skiers in our area had little to no snow to train on much of the season, their accomplishments at OFSAA are outstanding and a testament to their determination and drive to excel.
